This may be a tad hyperbolic title stating that these are heart wrenching movies. But genuinely all these movies made me shed a tear and sometimes uncontrollably sob whilst reviewing a section of my own life. And I promise some of these recommendations will get you.
or
1. The Notebook (2004)
What is a movies to sob to worthy movie list without a Nicholas Sparks movie. This movie caused millions to have their first crushes on Ryan Gosling, highlighted the acting range of Rachel Mcadams especially as the week before Mean Girls had been released and made some of us realise our standards of men are too low(I mean noah sent 365 HANDWRITTEN letters and some of us are still waiting for a text back). This movie has highs and lows and creates a sense of timeliness that keeps people coming back even though they know they will need a box of tissues just to make it through.
2. Me Before You
Finick Odair as a depressed rich man in a wheelchair falling in love with Targaryen- sign me up please. This movie is adorable and heart breaking as you root for these crazy kids in love whilst tackling the harsh realities that come with living with disabilities and the mental health issues that some people face. Most importantly who doesn’t love a movie that educates and entertains you especially in the fashion genre.
3. The Fault in Our Stars
This movie is based upon the book by John Green and explores the tragic and intense nature of first love with the added tragedy of terminal illness. This movie takes a journey of self discovery within love whilst taking the watcher through an array of emotions. If you are going to watch, bring some tissues and don’t get too nostalgic of teen love.
4. Five Feet Apart
More ill teens yay! Who knew terminally ill teens would cause the tear glands in my eye to become full? This movie is about teens who have cystic fibrosis meaning that they are coming in contact with each other literally. This is one of the more literal instances where love can kill.
5. A Star is Born
Alcoholism – check, Mental health issues – check, Gaga – check. What else could you ask for in a movie? Dealing with mental health issues is really hard and watching someone experience that suffering on screen means that dry eyes do not exist when watching this movie. In addition the songs that came out of this movie were astonishing and Gaga’s voice shines through beautifully.
6. The Best of Me
*Nods in more Nicholas Sparks movie recommendations* Something about a young couple breaking up then reuniting in future years appeals to me and this movie is no exception. Though I have some issues with the actor’s massive appearance change of the character of Dawson Cole it is completely excusable though as James Marsden had to quickly replace Paul Walker (Rip) due to his untimely death. Overall this movie is just a rollercoaster and you should totally watch it.
7. Atonement
James Mcavoy and Keira Knightley come together in this historical movie and magic appears before you. This movie shows the dangerous and sometimes life destroying nature of a lie and how it comes between young love all whilst being set around World War Two and there isn’t many things sadder than war.so perfect addition to this list of movies to sob to. Are you feeling sad enough yet? The next ones are sure to get you.
8. A Walk to Remember
As this is the third Nicholas Sparks movie I have recommended please dear reader take the hint and watch at least one Nicholas Sparks movie . They are so good. I think Nicholas just has a way with writing teen love that I love. It’s slightly idealised but as the audience you can’t help but love it. This movie is worthy of such a good sob sesh.
9. One Day
Recently there has been a series adaptation but the original movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturges has its own props and the trope of a relationship that you keep coming back to albeit it being a bit toxic is a favourite of mine and in this movie adds to the sadness that comes from finishing this movie.
10. Forrest Gump
Though there are some very problematic depictions of disabilities there is a special place in my heart for this movie and the emotional scenes tend to slap you in the face. Watch out for Jenny, she deserves the whole world.
If do watch these movies don’t blame me when you are sobbing like a baby. you were warned. If you end up feeling too sad watch the comedic excellence that is the Cornetto Trilogy
